Huddle Up, Get Your House Game Ready for Fall

Fall Football Season 1024x683 1

Summer is fading. Chilly mornings, football season, and the vibrant colors of autumn are on their way. Do you find yourself thinking bonfires, hoodies, tailgates, and chili? Us too. While you ponder the best game-day snacks, make sure to give a nod to readying your home for fall and prepping your HVAC system to be touchdown ready all season long.

In the Midwest, cooler temperatures seem to arrive earlier each year. Now is the perfect time to ready your home for fall and winter. The Drake Heating & Air team is here to help with the top seven tips to get your home transitioned for fall and winter before your favorite team’s kick-off.

7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for Fall and Winter:

  1. Check your heating system and change your filter
    • Switch your unit from cooling to heating and set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature. Make sure everything is running smoothly. Check your vents to make sure they’re not blocked or covered by furniture, carpeting or curtains. Make an appointment for an annual HVAC system tune-up.
  2. Inspect your fireplace and chimney
    • The fireplace is a gathering spot in the chilly months for many families. Now is the time to clear out ash and charred wood from the fireplace, and schedule your annual professional chimney cleaning. It also is a good time to stock up on firewood.
  3. Check for drafts
    • Exam windows and doors for cracks. Seal now to prevent drafts.
  4. Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
    • For most units, this equals simply pressing the test button.
  5. Check your water heater
    • Live in an area with hard water? Prepare for cooler weather by draining the water heater and clearing out any debris that has settled in the tank.
  6. Ready the garage and outside of your home for fall and winter
    • Drain outdoor faucets and irrigation systems. Clean out gutters. Pull out the leaf blower, rake, sidewalk salt, snow shovel, ice scrapers, and snowblower.
  7. Get cozy
    • Take cozy bedding, throws, and warm jackets out of storage and get everything washed and ready to go for the season’s chilliest days.

They renovated the utility space by removing a soft water conditioner, a hot water heater, replaced a humidifier, installed an on- the- wall water heater, a UV light to disinfect the furnace air flow, and a digital humidity controller. They replaced all the old water valves with more modern ones and rearranged the piping and ductwork in the space.
